Merlewae/ Merl /Sleepy Merl
I go by many different names revolving around the name merlewae. I chose the name after I read it in a manga during my early college days but later realized I had terribly misspelled it...but it was too late to fix it and i've grown fond of it :).
Like many children, I loved to draw and color. It was a great escape route and distraction from all my worries, art was healing for me. Growing up in a single father household, I was discouraged and told not to pursue art, and so I didn't. As a 2nd generation biracial Mexican and the eldest daughter, I had to fill the roles my dad expected of me and find a "real job". It took years, and i mean years, like 9 years to find something I really enjoy that wasn't art. That happened to be Psychology with the main focus on early childhood behavioral disorders, and mental health. BUT, we're not here to talk about how amazing psychology is and all the statistics and research it has to offer, we are here for art!
I first began taking commissions around the mid 2000's, and i did so much that it drained me of my passion. Yes, that is a thing! I didn't start drawing again until 2018, and i have been slowly getting back into it. What motivated me? K-pop! Sound silly??? Not for me, it is an incredible motivator! I had always been a casual k-pop fan since 2009, but something clicked in 2017, and here I am! Back to pursuing art, not as just a hobby, but a side job that brings me so much joy.
I am working on my own personal projects which consists of a webcomic (i have started many webcomics but could never get the story right) so I am writing carefully and hoping many of you will like this comic I am working on! I'm also designing k-pop graphic tees so i can one day open up my own shop! I have many dreams, and I hope to achieve at least one of these and prove to my dad that art is a real job,and it is one that is deeply appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my website and supporting small artists!
